The Yarn I Work With

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

One question I would always have when looking at people's crochet creations is what yarn did they use and why. So below I'll show some of the materials I like and the reasons behind it.

For my Classic collection I prefer to use 100% low-pill acrylic yarn. I usually stay within the same brand for a project, as the continuity of using similar materials ensures the evenness of my end products. Acrylic is extremely soft, comes in a wide array of colors, and has good stitch definition. I find it easier to work with than cotton, and when creating my amigurumi, the fuzziness of the finished product I get when I use acrylic is minimal. Acrylic is also easy to spot clean and machine washable (although I haven't mustered the courage to try it myself). It's also hypoallergenic, for those sensitive to plant and animal fibers.

Acrylic yarn, however, is not without flaws. With repeated friction, the yarn will start to pill, losing somewhat of its initial crisp look. So the recommendation is to be used as a novelty item or décor.

Polyester

I use 100% polyester on my Snuggles collection because it is more durable and it adds a velvety look. When using polyester, the finished product is more durable, softer, and plushier. It is also machine washable, but as before, I recommend spot cleaning for small messes. This type of yarn is able to withstand rougher play, while maintaining its shape and form.

On the downside, due its chunky nature, some of the stitch definition is lost when compared to acrylic, and color availability is limited.

Overall, I would say my current favorite is polyester, as the softness makes for smoother handling while crafting new amigurumi.

Let me know what yarn you like best and why in the comments below.
