Amigurumi is a special crocheting technique originated in Japan. The name comes from the combination of two Japanese words, 'ami' meaning crocheted or knitted, and 'nuigurumi' meaning stuffed doll. Using the Amigurumi techniques , crocheters have unlimited horizons ranging from dolls, toys, animals, and even food items, which are commonly used for sensory play and general education.

According to the Crochet Guild of America (CGOF), the earliest records of three-dimensional crochet was recorded in China, though the trend of Amigurumi started in Japan. The first actual Amigurumi dolls appeared in the 1970's when the trend of 'Kawaii', or cute, was spreading in Japan. Amigurumi started to take off in the West in the early 2000's.
