The Essentials Crochet Tools for Beginners:

1. Crochet Hooks

Let's start with the very foundation of crochet: the crochet hook. I remember fumbling through different hooks, unsure of which size to use for which project. Trust me, finding the right hook can make all the difference in your crochet experience.

As a beginner, it's best to begin with a medium-sized hook, like an H-8 (5mm) or I-9 (5.5 mm), that works well with a wide range of yarns and projects.

Two more important tips: Go with the ergonomic hooks instead of the cheap metal hooks. They will save you both time and a sore wrist!

Lastly, if you are still unsure what size hook to use for your yarn, look at the skien label, and it will give the suggested hook size for that weight yarn

2. Yarn

Ah, the kaleidoscope of colors and textures that yarn presents! As a newcomer, I was drawn to vibrant hues and intricate yarn blends, not realizing how the yarn weight could influence my projects.

I've since discovered that starting with a smooth, medium-weight yarn in a light color can ease your learning journey, making your stitches more visible and easier to count until you get a better hang of it.

Acrylic yarn is an excellent choice for beginners - affordable, versatile, and available in many different colors. Linked below is my favorite acrylic yarn of all!

3. Scissors

A humble pair of scissors might seem trivial, but trust me when I say they are a crochet's best friend. I recall using blunt scissors that snagged the yarn, causing frustration and uneven cuts.

Invest in a sharp pair of scissors with pointed tips - they'll make cutting yarn a breeze and ensure your projects look neat and tidy.

Here's a link to the scissors I use daily.

4. Yarn Needles (Darning Needles)

As I crocheted my way through various projects, I discovered the importance of yarn needles, also known as tapestry needles or darning needles. They allow you to weave in loose ends and join crochet pieces seamlessly, giving your finished work a polished appearance. Opt for needles with large eyes, simplifying the threading process.

I also strongly suggest investing the Clover's metal darning needles! The cheap plastic needles tend to bend and break over time, these metal needles stand the test of time!

5. Stitch Markers

Ah, the infamous "lost stitch" scenario - a tale every crocheter knows too well. Keeping track of stitches and rounds can be challenging, especially in complex patterns. That's where stitch markers swoop in to save the day! These little tools help you mark crucial points in your pattern, such as the beginning of a round or a specific stitch, preventing mishaps and ensuring consistent results.

Another tip that I wished I knew when I was beginning: stitch markers only work if you use them! Yes, it can be annoying to change them to a new stitch every row you complete, but you will thank yourself later when you loose count in your head, which will happen a lot at the beginning.

6. Measuring Tape

Accurate measurements are the backbone of well-fitted crochet projects. I learned this the hard way when my beautiful blanket turned out a size too small. Don't repeat my mistake! Keep a flexible measuring tape in your crochet kit to gauge your work's size and dimensions accurately.

7. Row Counter

The sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a row is undeniable. But, oh, the confusion when you lose count! To spare yourself from such puzzlement, invest in a row counter - a small gadget that keeps track of the number of rows you've completed. It's a game-changer for larger projects.

I linked to a manual clicker row counter but there are digital options too. Keep in mind that the static electricity created by the yarn can mess up the count on the digital counter.

8. Blocking Tools

My early crochet pieces often lacked the polished look I admired in other creations. That's when I learned about blocking - a magical technique that shapes and sets your finished crochet work. Investing in blocking mats and T-pins can elevate your projects to a whole new level of professionalism!

9. Crochet Bag or Organizer

As my love for crochet grew, so did my collection of tools and supplies. Keeping everything organized became a delightful challenge. To avoid a tangled mess of yarn and hooks, consider investing in a crochet bag or organizer with multiple pockets - a treasure trove that keeps everything tidy and easily accessible.

You will certainly thank yourself when all your crochet tools and yarn are organized and within easy reach on a long road trip, I know I did!

Through my own correct journey, I've experienced the joys and challenges that this craft brings. I hope that by sharing these essential crochet tools and supplies, you'll find yourself better equipped the embark on your own creative path. Remember, learning a new craft is a beautiful journey of discovery and growth. Embrace it with an open heart and with the right tools in hand, your crocheting adventures will blossom beyond your expectations.
